TJCL 2020 REMOTE Convention

Testing, virtual certamen, and elections are live!

Testing
Testing will occur at home this year, and students will have until midnight on the night of Thursday April 30 to turn theirs in. Tests may be taken in multiple sessions (i.e. one can take history one day and mythology the next). The use of books, notes, the internet, friends, and any other source of help is forbidden.

First, students will need to join a Google Classroom based on their level of Latin.
  • Latin ½ and 1: 24l3shf (the third character is a lowercase L)
  • Latin 2: sxg3y5c
  • Latin 3: 4hn6unf
  • Latin 4+: ng3ghza

Once students have joined, they can find the Delegate ID spreadsheet, a PDF of the tests, a Google Form answer sheet for each test, and instructions on how to test. Because the Google Form does not have the actual questions or answers, students are encouraged to jot their answers down on a piece of paper. A video demonstration can be found at https://youtu.be/fN4Dv8c4CGY and is also posted in each Classroom.

If you have trouble logging in with a school-linked Google account, try a personal one, and if you still can’t join, email tjcl2020testing@gmail.com.

Virtual Certamen
Each team interested in competing should agree upon a time to meet online in whatever format/platform you wish to meet.  Your team can consist of 1-4 players, and they can only be among the students registered for the convention by the teacher.  Your teacher may meet you online at that time too, but that is not required.  If the teacher joins you, they can only supervise and may not assist in any way.

One person on the team will open up the Google Form for your level, will read the items to others on the team, and will be responsible for typing the team's answers and submitting the form at the end.  The student who types on the form is allowed to share their screen with the others in the group.

Scores will be based on how many answers are correct AND on spelling/grammar AND on how long it takes you to complete the form.  No long marks will be required as part of any answers.

Submissions must be received by midnight on the night of Thursday April 30.  Winners in each level will be announced with other TJCL awards.

  • Advanced (Latin 3/4/5):  tinyurl.com/y9us25tm

Elections
Candidates were asked to record a video of their speeches and to answer a questionnaire. Parliamentarian Yashu Tang has compiled their responses and put them in this Google Drive folder, which you can send to your kids: https://tinyurl.com/tjcl2020elections

Inside the folder you’ll see a Speech Links document, which will lead the kids to the video speeches. Since some candidates typed their answers separately and Yashu didn’t want to edit the candidates’ documents in any way, she left a blank questionnaire as a reference for you. You’ll also see folders for each office, where you can find how the candidates replied to the questions.

Because we are not having a Nominations Committee meeting to pare our options down to two per office, some offices have more than two candidates. We wanted to avoid multiple rounds of voting, so we decided on a system where students will rank the candidates by preference. The winner will be whichever student has a majority of “1st preference” votes. If after the first round, no one has a majority, the candidate with the fewest “1st preference” votes will be eliminated and ballots will be adjusted accordingly; those ballots which had the removed candidate ranked as “1st preference” will change so that their “2nd preference” candidate is now their “1st preference” until a candidate has a majority of “1st preference” votes. Schools may vote no confidence in a candidate so that their vote is never changed to support that candidate. This will, however, be counted as a vote and therefore be used to determine what constitutes a majority of votes.

Teachers are free to determine how best to collect their delegates’ individual votes (e.g. Google Form, virtual meeting, etc.). They will contact their students with a plan for discussing and casting the school's votes. Only the teacher will cast the school’s vote.

Ballots must be submitted by midnight on the night of April 30.

Other Events
Graphic & Creative Arts, Spirit TikToks, and all other events were due April 14. They are now being judged and results will be announced along with testing results!

Sweepstakes
The Executive Board decided not to do Sweepstakes prizes this year given the unusual circumstances and concerns about equity. That’s not to say that we won’t still have some awards for the schools – tune in to the awards stream to find out!

Awards Stream
Speaking of which, the awards stream will still happen, but a week later due to our delayed start because of last weekend’s holidays. Therefore we’re rescheduling it for May 2 at 7:00 PM Central time on twitch.tv/tjcl2020. Afterwards, results will be emailed to sponsors.
